East Carolina Council, BSA -- How You May Invest In Your Future

Financially invest in East Carolina Council, BSA by selecting the pledge card below:

The East Carolina Council, Boy Scouts of America, has been building character and instilling values in young people since 1915. Always in strong partnership with the religious, civic and business communities, Scouting teaches traditional values, respect for God and Country, life skills and responsible citizenship to generations of area young people. Scouting provides the youth of eastern North Carolina with activities and programs outside of school hours which are safe, productive and structured. America has changed over the years, but the Boy Scouts continually strives to help each youth reach their highest potential. Your contribution is directly applied to the growth and future of eastern North Carolina youth. The Boy Scout program is the last national youth development program based on a belief in God.

With your gifts, we’re reaching more youth than ever!

Traditional Scouting serves youth ages 6 -20 including girls 14 through 20, in  20 counties reaching over 8,000 youth annually, including rural areas that have names like Colerain, Jackson, Ocracoke, Bailey, Pollocksville and Aurellian Springs.  Learning for Life provides life skills, career guidance and ethics education to over 5,000 school aged boys and girls through Learning for Life Groups and Explorer Posts.  East Carolina Council, BSA is reaching out to emerging cultures through the Hispanic emphasis initiative as well as low income areas such as public housing projects and through partnerships with several Boys & Girls Clubs.

Today's youth are America's future.
You can help shape America's future by investing in Scouting TODAY!

Ways to invest in Scouting's future... Friends of Scouting Campaign

What is Friends of Scouting?
Friends of Scouting is the annual campaign where the  East Carolina Council, BSA asks Scouting families, businesses and civic-minded citizens to support our mission of providing the Scouting program to thousands of young people in eastern North Carolina.

Why should I give to Friends of Scouting?
Friends of Scouting provides roughly one-third of the money needed to operate the Council's Scouting camps, programs and facilities for a calendar year. These camping and training facilities are the "outdoor classrooms" in which Scouts have fun, learn leadership skills and develop into better young men and women. The East Carolina Council spends approximately $190 per Scout each year to deliver these benefits and much more.

I already paid my child's registration and his unit collects annual dues. Haven't I already supported Scouting?
Your child's registration fee goes directly to the National Office of the Boy Scouts of America. These fees come back to East Carolina Council in the form of consulting services, program development and national high adventure camps. If your child's Scout unit collects dues, that money stays with the unit to help pay for trips and other activities. None of that money helps the East Carolina Council pay for:

  • Maintaining and staffing the council's 4 camping facilities
  • Training thousands of adult volunteer leaders in youth protection, unit leadership and skills training
  • Providing programs like Cub Scout Day Camp, Cub Scout Family Week-ends, Webelos Resident Camp, Boy Scout Summer Camp, Youth Leadership Training, Adult Leadership training courses, like Wood Badge. Much of the facility, ranger, office, professional and production cost for these events are not included in the event fee you pay.
  • Maintaining our council website and Constant Contact to be able to better inform Scouts and Scouters and their families on all of the current Scouting activities and policies.

Please consider a gift to the Friends of Scouting Campaign. Complete the pledge card at the top of the page. We need your support.

Golden Eagle Club: Offers individual donors who give a minimum of $1,250 in cash or securities an opportunity to make a major investment in the lives of youth and to be recognized. This includes being presented with one of our framed Rockwell prints.

Scout Family: Families who use the Scouting program directly are given the opportunity to support the overall effort through unit presentations and follow up. There is a recognition plan for individuals and units that participate in this plan.

Scout Community Campaign: A grass roots campaign of Friends of Scouting and alumni who believe Scouting builds leaders and better citizens for the future.

Employer Match: Please be sure to let us know if your employer matches financial gifts to our council.

United Way, Combined Federated Campaign & State Employee Campaign

Each year United Ways throughout the East Carolina Council, BSA holds their campaigns.  We would ask Scouters to support their local United Way Campaign.  In 2010 United Way allocations will provide 8% of the dollars needed for our operating budget. The following United Ways presently allocate funds to East Carolina Council, BSA.  They are:

  • Roanoke Valley United WayHalifax & Northampton
  • Tar River United Way – Nash & Edgecombe Counties
  • Beaufort County United Way
  • Lenoir & Greene County United Way
  • Coastal Carolina United Way – Carteret, Jones, Craven, & Pamlico
  • Onslow County United Way

Even those United Way campaigns who are supportive of East Carolina Council, BSA are changing philosophies and having to make tough decisions related to funding.  Help United Way make that choice by designating your gift to East Carolina Council, BSA.  Allocating your gift to East Carolina Council does not mean we will receive your gift, unless the total of the designated gifts add up to more than the allocation from the United Way to the council.  It does show United Way that the community supports the Boy Scout program.

If you live in the Washington, Wilson, Martin or Pitt Counties

We are not a member of the United Way in these communities therefore, the only way we can receive your United Way gift is for you to designate it to East Carolina Council, BSA.  Please include our address on your pledge card: P.O. Box 1698, Kinston, NC 28503. Each United Way does charge an administrative fee to process your contribution prior to us receiving it.

If you live in Pitt County

Most of you know that the United Way of Pitt County defunded the Boy Scouts in 2008.  This was a loss of $45,000 to the East Carolina Council, BSA.  We run a Designation Campaign to promote individuals to designate their Pitt County United Way gift to East Carolina Council.  If you would be willing to place a 26” X 16” real estate like sign in your yard to promote our designation campaign e-mail Michael Hesbach at mhesbach@bsamail.org with your phone number so he may contact you to arrange a sign.

Combined Federated Campaign

If you are in the military or a civilian working for the base or other federal employer then you can give to East Carolina Council, BSA by designating us on your pledge card.  Our agency number is 39140

State Employee Campaign

If you work of the State of North Carolina in Pitt or counties served by Coastal Carolina United Way you may also designate your gift to East Carolina Council, BSA.  Ask for a guide that lists the agencies to find the code for East Carolina Council, BSA.

Endowment Fund

The East Carolina Council, BSA has a goal to increase our endowment fund to more than $2,000,000. As the council fights to maintain services and control the cost of Scouting while the council continues to receive fewer dollars from United Ways (less than 8% of our total income) we must plan to have an endowment fund to provide a minimum level of financial support. Ways to give to the Endowment fund include:

Memorial & Honorary Gifts: There is no maximum or minimum size on these gifts. Consider a     Memorial Gift to the endowment fund instead of flowers or a gift to honor a new Eagle Scout or service to your son by a Scoutmaster. Just send your gift to East Carolina Council, BSA P.O. Box 1698, Kinston, NC 28503 with the form below or submit here.  The council will mail acknowledgement of the memorial or honorary give to the recipient and to you.

Memorial or Honorary Gift

James E. West Membership: This must be cash or securities equal to $1,000. The individual being honored or contributing the gift receives a framed certificate, pin for civilian wear and a Square Knot for the Scout uniform. The gift must and should be in addition to and not replace or diminish the donor’s annual Friends of Scouting support. Many individuals and corporations make these gifts either on behalf of someone else- such as in honor of an Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver recipient, a retirement, a special accomplishment, or anniversary or in memory of a special individual.

James E. West Form

Gift in Your Will: Be sure that the council is listed in your will as “East Carolina Council, BSA.” Please invest in our endowment fund at a level that will provide annual earnings that will replace your annual gift.

Please contact the Perry Scout Service Center for other ways to assist East Carolina Council, BSA at rfranks@bsamail.org or call 252-522-1521.
